01

A first surf trip starts before the water

Tamarindo is a well-known surf destination, but your first session should be chosen for you, not for a photograph of perfect waves. An independent instructor can assess your experience and the current conditions, explain the basics and choose an appropriate teaching area. Tell the provider honestly if you have never surfed, are not comfortable swimming or have a concern that may affect participation. Do not assume a beginner label means all conditions are suitable.

02

What to ask before booking a lesson

Ask how long the lesson lasts, how many students share an instructor and what equipment is included. Confirm whether the session is private or shared, the meeting place and the weather or cancellation policy. Children may have different requirements, so provide their ages in advance. Surf Ranch can help arrange a board or instructor before arrival, but the hotel has no in-house surf school or board rentals. The provider confirms the lesson and its terms.

Let the instructor choose the equipment

The right board for learning is not necessarily the one you would choose from a surf photograph. Ask the instructor to recommend equipment for your size, ability and the conditions. Confirm whether a rash guard, leash and board are supplied, and whether there are separate charges. If you rent outside a lesson, ask about return times and damage terms. Board storage is available on the hotel rack when you return from the beach.

04

Keep the first day flexible

Avoid promising yourself a long session immediately after a flight. Settle into your room, find the beach and check the meeting details first. Your instructor should set a suitable time rather than a fixed sunrise plan chosen weeks ahead. Breakfast is included from 8 to 10 am, so coordinate the lesson if you want to eat at Café 13. Afterward, use the outdoor shower and give yourself time to rest before another activity.

05

Make progress without rushing it

Learning includes ocean awareness, handling the board and respecting other people in the water, not only standing up. Ask questions when you are unsure and follow your instructor’s directions. Keep a rest day or another local activity in your trip rather than assuming you will surf every hour. Staying across from the main break makes it easy to watch conditions and return to your room, but it does not replace instruction or current local advice.
