01

Can you enjoy Tamarindo without renting a car?

Yes, a stay centered on Tamarindo town and the main beach can work well without a rental car. The key is choosing accommodation near what you plan to do most. Surf Ranch is across the road from the main surf break, with Café 13 next door for included breakfast. If your itinerary involves a different remote beach every day, compare that plan separately: a walkable town stay does not eliminate the need for transport everywhere else.

02

Arrange the airport leg first

Your arrival and departure are the transport decisions to settle first. Surf Ranch offers separately priced airport shuttles through its shuttle booking page, with current options for Liberia and San José. Include the airport, arrival date, flight details, passenger count and luggage needs. If you are traveling with a surfboard, tell the provider before booking so vehicle suitability can be confirmed. Leave flexibility for traffic and flight delays.

Build a day that stays local

Begin with breakfast between 8 and 10 am, walk across to check the beach, then choose a lesson or time in town. Carry what you need for the weather and use care on roads and uneven surfaces. Ask a tour provider whether its pickup is at your hotel or a separate meeting point. A central location can simplify your day, but it does not mean every road or route is accessible to every traveler.

04

Use planned transport for day trips

For trips to other beaches or inland attractions, ask about a round trip rather than arranging only the outward ride. Confirm the pickup place, return time, total price and how to contact the driver or guide. For Playa Grande, use an appropriate transport route and never swim or wade across the estuary. If several guests travel together, compare the full vehicle cost with individually priced tours before deciding.

05

When a rental car may still suit you

A car may make sense if your trip has many stops, equipment or repeated journeys outside town. Compare rental charges, insurance, fuel and parking with the transfers you would otherwise book. Check parking arrangements directly before bringing a vehicle to Surf Ranch. For a short beach stay, airport transport plus one organized outing may be simpler. Choose around your itinerary rather than assuming a car is essential for every Costa Rica vacation.
